SCAN4RECO Newsletter No.2 (October 2016) SCAN4RECO is a 3-year Research and Innovation Action (2015-2018) where 9 partners from 5 countries collaborate in developing ICT solutions for efficient restoration and prevention of degradation of cultural heritage objects. The need to preserve, provide advanced access to and understanding of cultural heritage is of utmost importance, especially when considering its wealth throughout Europe. |

SCAN4RECO 1st year anniversary
In October 2016 one year has passed since the SCAN4RECO project has started operating. During this time a number of activities have been accomplished, from consolidation of user needs leading to the formulation of system specification, based on which
the system architecture has been consolidated and first developments of basic technological enablers pursued. Applied research has been pursued resulting in over twenty publications in peer-reviewed conferences
and journals. Collaborations with similar projects has been established. The SCAN4RECO project has also sought wide visibility through presentations at various high-publicity events. More information about each
of those activities is given below. |

First Concept Architecture
The overall architecture has been developed, which is intended to be modular and easily customized, using a toolbox approach that supports flexible mixing and matching of individual components to address end user needs. The definition of the multilevel
architecture structure and of its components has been derived from the breakdown of the conceptual architecture described in the project grant into a series of high-level functionalities and system requirements
(technical, functional, operational) that map the conceptual core elements to the end-user needs (deliverable D2.3).
The resulting architecture is modular, multi-level, and flexible, as individual components and component subsets are loosely connected and can be used all together or standalone in order to perform specific
tasks. You can see below the function composition of sub-systems and modules with indication of their inter-relationships. Description of functionalities and design details can be found in deliverable D2.3.
Note that the system architecture might be subject to further iterative refinements subject to changing market needs, availability of new commercial technologies, new research outcomes and due to other earlier unforeseen circumstances. Next project activities
will now be pursued in technological work-packages (WP3-WP6) while side activities will commence on integration and validation in real-life trials (WP6-WP7). Progress on those activities will be reported in
the next newsletters.

Scan4Reco to be presented at the “Cultural Heritage: Reuse Remake Reimagine” Conference, Berlin, 21-22nd October 2016
The SCAN4RECO project has been invited to participate in the 3rd "Networking Session of EU Projects on Cultural Heritage" hosted by the E-Space and organised by the Europeana Space Best Practice Network in Berlin at the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwart on the 21-22nd of November 2016. Such networking events represent an opportunity to reflect on the impact that cultural heritage projects deliver,
identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness of their results, and identify synergies and the potential for collaboration among projects. |
